“Can you imagine us years from today,
sharing a parkbench quietly?
How terribly strange to be seventy…”
WHEN WE’RE YOUNG…
We have a thousand photos taken of us. People are obsessed with the wonders of youth and seem to be acutely aware of how fleeting childhood years are. But what about the last chapter of life? Isn’t that just as fleeting?
Named after the Simon & Garfunkel song, Old Friends is a series that aims to celebrate aging and the beauty of companionship through a fashion lens. My goal is to blur the line between young and old through scenes of nostalgia, color, and symmetry. In our society, aging is not typically associated with beauty. But through my lens, I see so much beauty! We often imagine aging as a lonely journey toward death, but I look at it as a party, a dance between color and friendship. There are stories behind wrinkles, an elegance to grey hair…The aging process is not all pretty, I’m sure, but for these few moments in front of my lens, it’s stunning. It’s fun. And it’s not something to be afraid of, after all.
Why is this important to me? Well, one of my main social groups is comprised of older people. I spend the majority of my time with my parents, aunts and uncles, and grandparents, who range from 60-98. My grandparents are so interesting to hang out with and have so many stories to tell. They inspire me daily!
